In addition to controlling Dan, the player can communicate with other team members and issue orders through the use of a microphone. Levels of trust can also effect the ending. Destroying scrap-heads or responding correctly to conversations increases this trust, while failing to act, saying the wrong things or shooting team members lowers trust. Much of the game is based around a "trust" system, in which characters gain or lose trust in Dan depending on his actions.
It is similar to the 2006 Xbox 360 game, Gears of War which is credited with popularising this genre in the console space. Binary Domain is a third-person cover based shooter, in which the player (Dan) and other members of the Rust Team combat deadly robots ("scrap-heads").
